Executive Director, Cooperative for After-School Enrichment – Harris County Department of Education
Lisa M. Thompson-Caruthers, MSW, Ph.D., serves as the Director for the Cooperative for After-School Enrichment (CASE), a division of Harris County Department of Education. Dr. Caruthers has seventeen years of out of school time experience, eleven of which have been at CASE. Before joining the CASE team, Lisa provided management support to the Houston arts community and taught in after-school and summer arts-based programs in both Houston and St. Louis.
Lisa received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Louisiana, her Masters in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis, and her doctorate from University of Houston’s Graduate School of Social Work. Her research specialty is youth engagement, out of school time programming, and systems that equalize access for low-income youth.
As the director of CASE, Dr. Caruthers provides leadership, training, technical support, and grants management to over 70 after-school programs serving over 12,000 youth. Over the last decade, she has been actively involved in leveraging over $100 million in funds for out of school time programming. Since its launch in February, she has provided leadership to the community based research initiative ENRCH After-School in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of the Houston region’s after-school field. Lisa uses her background in social work and the arts to bring a unique perspective to the out of school time field.
